- Title
- New Lynwood High School
- Description
- The project proposes construction of a new high school on 14.8 acres that would accommodate approximately 1,600 students. The existing Lynwood High School was originally designed with a capacity for 3,472 students, but currently enrolls approximately 4,346 students (approximately 874 students over capacity). The proposed new high school would relieve overcrowding at the existing high school by providing capacity for approximately 800 currently enrolled high school students, and accommodate enrollment growth anticipated as existing middle and elementary students grow older. No overall increase in district enrollment is projected due to the proposed project. In order to provide a site of sufficient size to accommodate the school structures and associated recreational space, the District proposes to acquire John D. Ham Memorial Park and 27 residential parcels located immediately west of the park. Ham Memorial Park occupies 10.2 acres and accommodates a number of recreational programs. The Abbott Residence, located at the southeast corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Wright Road, would be relocated as part of the proposed project. The project would include approximately 162,000 gross square feet of classrooms and academic uses, gymnasium and recreational facilities, and administrative and related support space, including a multi-purpose activity center. The proposed project would include all the necessary components for the new high school, including classrooms and other educational facilities, recreational facilities such as playing fields and a gymnasium, and administrative and related support space. Approximately 416 parking spaces would be provided on the site, in a surface lot and parking structure. Playing fields, landscaped open space, and other recreational amenities would be incorporated into the proposed project. Preliminary plans indicate that lighted ball fields would not remain at the project site if the City enters in a Joint Use Agreement, as proposed by the District. The recreational facilities in the park would be made available to area residents during non-school hours, weekends, and holidays.
