Document Description
Caltrans proposes to construct a soldier pile wall to reinforce a failing crib wall wall on State Route 1 in Monterey County between post mile 27.5 to 27.7. Work will also consist of roadway excavation, structure excavation, and backfilling. One culvert at post mile 27.64 will be replaced and extended. Additional work will include installation of a structural pavement section, overlay over the entire roadway within the project limits, installation of Midwest Guardrail, AC dike, and traffic striping. A subsurface geotechnical investigation consisting of 2 borings in the roadway would be required to determine the soil/geologic conditions at the site of the proposed soldier pile wall. The purpose of this project is to replace the damaged crib wall and associated embankment to ensure the safety and reliability of the highway. The project is needed to address slope failure and the damaged crib wall. Winter storms in 2017 caused horizontal and vertical soil displacement of the slopes both above and below the roadway.
