Document Description
Amendment of permit issued by State Water Division of Drinking Water (DDW) Resources Control Board authorizing the Glendale Water Treatment Plant (GWTP) to remove PFAS from the groundwater. The Glendale Water Treatment Plant was constructed as part of the Glendale Operable Unit, one of the four USEPA Superfund Cleanup Projects in the San Fernando Basin, to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the groundwater. The GWTP is already removing PFAS from the groundwater in the treatment process; however, on July 13, 2018, DDW issued a drinking water notification level for PFOA (5.1 ppt) and PFOS (6.5 ppt). On February 6, 2020, DDW reduced the response levels of PFOA and PFOS in drinking water to 10 ppt for PFOA and 40 ppt for PFOS. With the new notification levels and response levels, DDW is issuing a permit amendment for GWTP to officially remove and monitor PFAS from its water. Since the current operation and existing treatment process is removing PFAS, there is no physical change required to the GWTP for this permit amendment.
