Document Description
Project area is 1348 acres which was originally developed ranch land which is currently managed for wildlife habitat. The area is characterized by high mountain desert comprised of western junipers of varying age classes (1 to 100+ years), sage, rabbit brush and grass species. Elevation rangers from 2,598 feet to 2,952 feet with slopes ranging from 0% to 50%. Most of the project area is located on the valley floor, but the area contains several isolated foothills throughout. In general, soils are typically shallow, very rocky and poorly developed. The area surrounding the project boundary is also characterized as high mountain desert which has been developed into rural residential properties associated with various types of agriculture. Project is designed to reduce and eliminate light fuels (grass, sage, rabbit brush and juniper seedlings) and on an annual basis, through the use of prescribed fire, as a means to reduce fire danger in the immediate area. The project will also reduce encroachment of western juniper trees and generally improve wildlife habitat. Project activities will entail installation of control lines followed by prescribed burning. Control lines will be constructed by both hand crews and ground based heavy equipment. Most of the control lines will be located on flat topography. Control lines constructed on slopes in excess of 5% will have water breaks installed.
