Document Description
The project will utilize hand crews to create a shaded fuel break in forest dominated areas and a residential mosaic in shrub dominated areas on up to 196 acres along portions of Woodside Rd/SR 84 from Skyline Blvd/SR 35 to Portola Rd, on portions of Bear Gulch Rd and on portions of Thornewood Open Space preserve access roads, in addition to a 4-acre patch of eucalyptus removal along Woodside Rd in Wunderlich County Park. Invasive and undesirable sprouting species may be treated with herbicide to prevent re-establishment in the project area. The shaded fuelbreak width will vary depending on terrain and fuel loads, extending up to approx. 50 ft from the edge on both sides of the aforementioned roads. On Woodside Rd/ SR 84, the fuelbreak extent shall reach up to edge of the Cal Trains ROW, which is typically 30 ft from road centerline, out to a max of 50' from road centerline. The project width will vary depending on the established ROW (fences), and landowner permissions. Some roadside areas will not be treated due to cut banks, light fuels, riparian set-backs or landowner requirements. Fire Safe San Mateo County will conduct outreach to educate and mobilize the community. Caltrans will conduct traffic control while the project is occurring along Woodside Rd/SR 84. It is anticipated this project will be conducted periodically over several months, in the summers of 2017 and 2018.
