Document Description
The proposed project consists of grading of land to restore a more natural, historic hydrological regime and riparian floodplain habitat and function at the Cougar Wetland Unit. The proposed project would be achieved by reconnecting the historic floodplain habitat and topography through the creation of levee breaches and a small portion of some of the historic slough channels that once existed within the Cosumnes Sink. In total, the project site consists of approx 154 acres within the Cosumnes River Preserve, of which only 8 acres will be actively disturbed. One international levee breach will be created along the Cosumnes River at the southern end of the Cougar Wetland Unit. The breach width will be approx 40 ft wide at the peak of the existing levee, and approx 15 ft wide at the river's streambed or flow line. The main slough channels and smaller side channels will be engineered to maintain positive drainage in order to prevent the stranding of native fish species within the newly restored waterways. An estimated total of one mile of slough channels would be created within the Cougar Wetland Unit. In total, approx 20,500 cy of soil will be moved within the project site and 5,000 cy of stripping's (large wood material) will be hauled off-site.
