Document Description
The Newell County Water District wastewater system renovation project is proposed to eliminate sewage overflows and effecting groundwater. The existing collection system was installed in 1942 as part of the Japanese American detention center. There was limited installation of new pipe in 1982 to a small southern portion of the area. The original treatment system consisted of a sewage pumping station and an Imhoff tank with sludge and effluent beds. In 1982 a duplex sewage pumping station, a 4" sewer force main, 2 facultative lagoons and two percolation beds were constructed. In 1997 a third percolation bed was constructed. The grade of the existing collection system is nearly flat and leads to frequent system blockages and surcharging manholes. Pipe materials are vitrified day and concrete which are prone to cracks and leakage. The existing pipe and leakage. The existing pipe needs to be replaced and sloped correctly. A new pumping station will need to be constructed in order to assist in correct sloping. An existing second pumping station will be removed as unnecessary. The lagoons will require extensive renovation to improve the treatment of sewage.
