Document Description
This project proposes to treat 92 acres of Sierra National Forest (SNF) land under the Good Neighbor Authority. The project area is within the existing Acorn Sugarloaf fuel break. Understory maintenance and new fuel break installation on 92 SNF acres utilizing hand and tractor piling for burning, mastication, and chipping will be performed. The ponderosa pine over story has sustained up to 100% mortality due to drought and subsequent beetle activity. The dead tree over story will be felled. Logs will be decked for eventual burning and slash will be pile burned. The existing NEPA and finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) includes the above described range of treatment methods. Work will be performed by a combination of Sierra National Forest and Cal FIRE FKU resources.

The project is exempt under CEQA Categorical Exemption 15304 Minor Alterations to Land. A search of the California Natural Diversity Field Review by CAL FIRE staff confirmed that no exceptions apply which would preclude the use of a Notice of Exemption for this project. The Department has concluded that no significant environmental impact would occur to aesthetics, agriculture and forestland/timberland, air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, geology and soils, greenhouse gas emissions, hazards and hazardous materials, hydrology and water quality, land use planning, mineral resources, noise, population and housing, public services, recreation, transportation/traffic, or to utilities and service systems. Documentation of the environmental review completed by the Department is kept on file at CAL FIRE's Fresno Kings Unit Headquarters (Attention: Environmental Coordinator) in Sanger, CA. This project as proposed shall not have a significant impact on the environment.
