Document Description
DWR proposes to direct a contractor to transport 240 lf of existing 85 1/2 in diameter cement mortar-lined steel pipe from its current storage location at the Sunol gravel pit to the new pipe storage area located within an existing Caltrans storage yard off of Scott Creek Rd. At the current storage site, the pipe will be picked up by a crane that is positioned on the adjacent existing dirt road and loaded onto trucks for transport to the proposed pipe storage area Scott Creek Rd. If a smaller crane is used to pick up the pipe, the crane may need to be positioned at multiple points in the approximately 50'x300' grassy area between the pipes and the dirt road. Access to the current storage location will be from Calaveras Rd and existing dirt roads on site.
The contractor will regrade, compact, and place geotextile fabric and aggregate base over an area of approximately 28,000 sf at the new storage site. Within the area, the contractor will create several rows of windows from soil on the site approximately 600 lf of 85 1/2 in diameter and 600 lf of 73 1/2 in diameter cement mortar lined steel pipe. After placement of the pipe, the contractor will install approximately 700 lf of fencing to secure the storage area.
DWR is taking steps to ensure the reliability of the South Bay Aqueduct and has identified locations where the pipeline may sustain damage during a large earthquake. By storing the pipe close to these critical locations, DWR will be able to quickly repair damage and return the South Bay Aqueduct to service.
