Document Description
The Willows Road Bridge Scour Project is located in the unincorporated community of the Willows, east of Alpine and west of the Viejas Indian Reservation, in eastern San Diego County. The Willows Road Bridge is located where Viejas Creek flows under Willows Road (Thomas Bros. Page 1234 H5). The County proposes improvements to prevent scour from occurring under the footings for the Willow Road Bridge. Hydraulic and scour evaluations indicate that a 100-year flood event would scour the existing footings for the bridge, several of which are known to be located between 1 and 12 feet above non-scourable bedrock. These footings are therefore susceptible to scour below the footings, which could undermine the integrity of the bridge. The proposed project includes two methods to protect the piers at bents 3 through 9. During construction, a temporary road would be created so that construction vehicles can access the underside of the bridge. This road would be to the immediate north of the bridge from Willows Road. Construction is expected to take approximately 7 months. The ground beneath the bridge will be recontoured and revegetated with native species after construction.
