Document Description
The project involves approval of a Removal Action Workplan (RAW) for the Salinas Community School (Site). The cleanup decisions document, referred to as a RAW, summarized soil samples collected and analyzed during a Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) which identified soils on the Site contained elevated concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the perimeter of a former structure and from previous agricultural use. Based on the data collected during the PEA, DTSC determined that further action was required to address the potential health threat to future students and staff posed by the presence of elevated OCP concentrations at the Site.
The RAW proposed excavation and off-site removal of impacted soil over a period of 20 days. The following project-specific activities are intended to prevent exposure of contaminants to future site occupants and protect the environment.
- Excavation – Approximately 1,200 cubic yards (approximately 99 truckloads) of contaminated soil will be excavated and loaded onto trucks for disposal. Standard equipment including backhoes, excavators, and front- end loaders and/or other appropriate equipment will be used to conduct excavation activities. Confirmation sampling will be conducted to ensure cleanup goals have been met.
- Transportation and Off-Site Disposal – Contaminated soil will be transported by truck to the Kettleman Hills Hazardous Waste Facility. An approved truck route will be followed for trucks disposing contaminated soil.
