Document Description
Pacific Gas & Electric Company owns and operates the Rock Creek-Cresta hydroelectric generation project on the North Fork Feather River, in Plumas County. The project is authorized under a license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, (FERC# 1962). Two key features of this hydroelectric generation project are the Rock Creek and Cresta Dams and the associated reservoirs or fore bays. Both dams utilize two large, steel drum gates that can be retracted into chamber witnin the dams. Each dam has two drum gates 124 feet long by 28 foot high. The gates are hollow steel structures constructed of steel plates skins riveted over steel ribs. Each gate weighs about 750 tons, is hinged at the top edge, and when raised from drum gate chambers within the dams retains reservoir water above the fixed crest; thus they are the primary means for regulating reservoir elevation.
A total of 852 cubic yards has accumulated in the drum gate chambers, which may eventually impede proper gate operation. In addition, a seal on one of the gates at Cresta Dam is damaged and in need of repair. Routine maintenance of four (4) existing drum gate chambers, two (2) each at both Rock Creek and Cresta Dams. On ten-year cycle, accumulated sediment must be removed from drum gate chamber cavities in order to maintain proper/safe gate operation.
