Document Description
The proposed project consists of the adoption of the Berkeley Pedestrian Master Plan. The Plan, which defines a pedestrian as "a person moving from place to place, on foot and/or with the use of an assistive mobility device (when that person has a disability and/or medical condition)," is intended to serve as a guide to the development and enhancement of the pedestrian environment and associated facilities within the City of Berkeley. The Plan identifies the following specific ways that it would provide guidance to City staff to enhance the pedestrian experience and infrastructure: identify opportunities and constraints with respect to the existing pedestrian system; evaluate trends in pedestrian usage, demand, and safety; identify a list of projects and programs to enhance the pedestrian environment; identify areas where further feasiblity studies are necessary to evaluate proposed improvements; prioritize recommended projects and develop a long-term strategy for implementation; identify likely funding sources for identified projects and programs; and provide detailed guidelines, standards, and policies to ensure that all projects undertaken in the City incorporate best practices for pedestrian design.
