Timberwolf Defense Zone

Create a defensible fuel profile zone (DFPZ) on the 25 acre Timberwolf Defense Zone at Sugar Pine State Park to reduce the threat of a catastrophic wildfire and improve native forest composition and structure. A California Registered Professional Forester will oversee the identification and marking of trees to be removed. Forest thinning, hazard fuel reduction, and debris pile burns will be conducted by hand crew. Debris piles will be burned in accordance with county and state regulations. A DPR-qualified cultural resource specialist will conduct cultural resource surveys prior to the project. Cultural resources will delineate with flagging by or under the direct supervision of the park district archaeologist no more than 30 days prior to implementation of the project. If the project is delayed over 30 days from the time of flagging, a DPR-qualified archaeologist or Registered Professional Forester will check the flagging to ensure cultural resource sites are delineated prior to field activities. Fuel reduction will be limited to hand clearing within and adjacent to recorded archaeological sites and other cultural resource features. Vehicles will be prohibited within flagged cultural resource sites and burning debris piles is prohibited within site boundaries. In the event that previously undocumented cultural resources are encountered during project construction, work will cease at the location of the find until a DPR-qualified archaeologist has evaluated the find and implemented treatment and disposition of the artifact(s).
