Document Description
The proposed project will enable Martinez Refining Company to produce gasoline that meets the expected California Air Resources Board Phase 3 specifications without using Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE). This project was initiated in response to a March 25, 1999 Executive Order by the Governor of California, which requires removal of MTBE from gasoline in California by no later than December 31, 2002. MTBE, which is an oxygenating agent added to gasoline to reduce air pollution from automobiles, has been determined to pose an environmental threat to groundwater and drinking water.
