Sacramento Municipal Utility District's Upper American River Project is licensed through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as Project 2101. The License requires SMUD to develop recreation facilities within the Project Boundary for public use. Three phases of recreation development have been completed. Numerous campgrounds, bicycle facilities, picnic areas, a ski chalet, boating facilities and hiking trails have been completed. The final phase under the current license; Phase 4 is scheduled for construction in 2002 and 2003. The 2002 work is called Phase 4A and the 2003 work is called Phase 4B. The Phase 4A work includes 1) Gerle Creek Parking Area, 2) Gerle Creek Foot Trail, 3) Union Valley Bike Trail, 4) Fashoda Campground Shower Building, 5) Fashoda Campground Improvements, and 6) Big Hill Overlook. The Phase 4B work includes: 7) Northstar Campground.
