The County of Monterey has applied for a demolition permit to demolish the old Monterey County Jail in its entirely, making the site available to the County for future development of office space. Demolition would occur over a 60 to 90 day period. The structure is currently used as a court holding facility and storage area. The use of the structure as a court holding facility would be relocated to the adjacent North Wing of the County's Courthouse complex, primarily to increase the holding capacity and improve security.
