Document Description
The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District proposes to divert surplus water from the Carmel River Basin for underground injection and storage in the Seaside Ground Water Basin, as part of a feasibility project during the water year (WY) 2002 precipitation season. This is continuation of the pilot feasibility project conducted by the MPWMD upon completion of the Seaside Pilot Injection Well (SPIW) in May of 1998. Testing at the SPIW has been conducted during the last three full recharge seasons (i.e., WYs 1999, 2000, and 2001). The proposed test project will utilize the existing Carmel River diversion, treatment, and transmission facilities owned and operated by the California American Water Company (Cal-Am) to transport treated surface and subsurface water from the Carmel River to one or more of three injection wells located within Cal-Am production well field in the Seaside Basin. The three injection wells are the existing SPIW; a planned well to be to be known as the Santa Margarita Test Well, and the existing Ord Grove #1 well, which is an inactive Cal-Am production well. The production and distribution system for the two basins are linked via the existing Canada de la Segunda pipeline, which is a 16-to 30-inch diameter water transmission line approximately three miles long, extending from Carmel Valley to the Seaside portion of the Cal-Am distribution system at Highway 68 southeast of the City of Seaside.
