Document Description
The proposed project at the California Institution for Men (CIM) would modify the existing ventilation system to increase the number of air exchanges per hour in the HIV dormitories located in the Del Norte building. The project would include replacing the cell door windows, two air handlers for inmate cells, two recirculating packaged air conditioning units, new thermostats and controls. The existing Del Norte building is two-story housing building with centrally located dayroom, office and support spaces on both floors, and with cell wings extending to the north and south of the central spaces. Primary mechanical equipment is located in a mechanical room on the first floor level at the center of the building on the east side. There is also a basement tunnel level used for pipe and conduit distribution, and as an air exhaust plenum from cell chases that open into it. The project is needed because of the high number of HIV infected inmates at CIM who are susceptible to contracting (and transmitting) tuberculosis (TB). The project would increase the ventilation and reduce the possibility of spreading TB. The project would accommodate the existing population and involves no expansion of existing use.
