THE FLOATING NET PEN PROJECT LOCATED IN THE HARBOR AT PORT SAN LUIS WILL ACCLIMATE APPROX. 70000 CHINOOK SALMON FINGERLINGS, DELIVERED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME'S FEATHER RIVER HATCHERY, AND RELEASE THEM INTO THE HARBOR. THE ACCLIMATION PROCESS WILL TAKE SEVERAL DAYS AND IS ACCOMPLISHED BY PLACING THE FISH IN A LINER INSERTED IN THE NET PENS, WHICH IS FILLED WITH FRESH WATER THE FRESH WATER IN THE LINED NET PEN IS GRADUALLY REPLACED WITH SEA WATER.ONCE THE WATER IN THE LINED PENS ARE AT THE SAME SALT CONTENT AS THE SURROUNDING WATER THE LINER IS REMOVED. THE FISH ARE THEN HELD FOR APPROX. TWO TO THREE MONTHS.APPROX. 35000 CHINOOK SALMON ARE RELEASED WHEN THEY REACH APPROX. 8 FISH PER POUND.
